The Good Shepherd (the Lord Jesus Christ) always leads out His sheep and guides them on the right path. He actively does this in a combination of ways.
While the Lord primarily leads, guides, or directs His children through His written Word and inward knowing, voice, and witness of the Holy Spirit, He also gives dreams, visions, and trances to lead, guide, or direct His children.
However, ignoring clear divine guidance through God's Word and Spirit to seek supernatural dreams, visions, or trances is unwise and unsafe.
